So, I decided to put this old piece of work up at the lates Threadless Loves contest, I think it works pretty well due to it being a mirror image (mostly). The contest is about making a design that not only works on a shirt but also flip flops. This one does that pretty well I think.

So, this week's derby theme is 'Band Names Reinterpreted' - take a real band's name and make a literal reinterpretation of it. For my first one (I have several ideas and such limited time) I did Owl City. Not that I'm particularly fond of the band or know anything about them, but this design just kinda came out.

So, I seem to have a penchant for doing these types of designs. My art time has been limited lately, so I was only able to squeeze this quick one out. It's really not one of my best, but I like to keep up the skills. Even if it's up only for a little while - still good to do something worthwhile.

This Norwegian Blue, with its beautiful plumage, appears to be pinin for the fjords. Or has it just ceased to be? Either way I made this (and apologies to, if necessary) Monty Python "Dead Parrot" sketch inspired tee design long ago and recently cleaned it up, redid a bunch of the text, and subbed it at Threadless. Not sure how well it will do - I like the joke but will that be enough to get it a good score (i.e. above a 3?).

Working on this week's shirt.woot derby entry. The theme this week; "Faster, Higher, Stronger" about the Olympics (but not about the Olympics and they don't want Onlympic themed tees) is not really my favorite (ok, what's new there, right?) but still I'd like to do something new. Came up with the idea of a super toaster with fourteen slots grabbing every toastable item it could get its hands on - bread, bagels, pop tarts...

I usually don't post wip sketches but I really like this one!

So, A little bit recycled, a little bit new. I made this "dragon" coming out of a Song dynasty amphora. Black and turquoise on orange. Hope someone out there likes it at least somewhat - went through a lot of revisions and this is where it ended up.

Huzzah and thank you to the voters (and of course the shirt.woot folks for your fine contest) for voting me into second place in the Derby! I'm really stoked to finally have a "real" derby victory. I really enjoyed both my Editor's Choice prints, but to win the contest is something else entirely.

So for day two of Make Something "Cool" Everyday I made a Venn diagram of what could possibly be in a hot dog. I struggled for a long time on what to put in the circles and overlapping bits and had lots of good suggestions but settled on the raccoon, pigeon/seagull, and platypus.

New at DBH

Well, maybe not completely new. I took the Death's Head Hawkmoth design I did and put it back to one color, making a pattern out of it as was suggested by someone. At first I really didn't like it so much, but tried a few color variations and size variations until there were two that looked pretty good.

Now, the all over print has kind of grown on me, maybe it's just the wine talking, or maybe it's just because it's my own work, but I think it looks good. If you do to, I'd appreciate a vote and comment over at Design by Humans.

I reworked this old sunflower design that I had - it's supposed to be that the center of the sunflower is made of solar cells - not sure how apparent that is. I'm really did put a lot of work into this one so a decent score would be nice!

shirt.woot packaging design contest

I've gone completely mad and spent entirely too much time making a design for this week's contest. This one at shirt.woot is a little different than usual, as it's not for shirts. Instead, woot would like some new packaging to put their shirts into. They say that the top three will be picked for packaging designs, provided of course they meet the scrutiny of the judge(s) and follow all the rules of the Derby.

This one is about ten hours of work - all hand done lines of course. Not sure if it makes good packaging or not, but I certainly like it. Hope you do too.

I decided that I just hadn't done enough with the Death's Head Moth design I did sometime ago (and comprises a bit of the header image above), so I redid the entire thing in a tribal tattoo fashion. Initially, I made it a one color, light blue on asphalt image. It looked nice, but just didnt have enough pop. So I branched out a bit and made it really come alive. The coloring on the second version (red, orange, and yellow on black) really shines and gives it a 3D effect.

It was entered into the shirt.woot tattoo derby last week and came in 11th. However, the very cool Adam "Ape Lad" Koford was asked to guest pick Honorable Mention designs and selected mine, which is really awesome! I really appreciate it.

So that makes five entries for the upcoming Do-over Derby, that should be one of the next few.

I can't ever get red shirts to look right when doing comp images. They look perfect when making them, but when uploading it looks less than ideal. Tried color matching and all the other stuff.

Last week's derby was #100, and it was "Mystery". Artist names were hidden and I didn't want to post my entry here just in case someone read up. Not that it was that difficult to figure out who did what, with SDS (shirtderbystats.com) letting the cat outta the bag. But that's also woot's fault. Anyway it's not that big of a deal. I started submitting to the shirt.woot derby way back on #19, Travel. My first entry got 5 votes, and I can understand why by looking back.

The theme this week is "Fake Band T-shirts". I decided to do a parody of C+C Music Factory's "Gonna Make You Sweat" (which is almost 20 years old btw, wow!), with PB+J Music Factory, "Gonna Make You Lunch". I'm pretty pleased with how this came out, special thanks to the kind folks at BadTParty.

New piece this week for the shirt.woot contest. The theme this week is "Famous Quotations Illustrated", but they have made a lot of quotable material off limits. No song lyrics or dialogue from movies, TV shows, or video games. So, I went way back in time and found a nice art quote from Seneca. Seneca was a Roman dramatist, philosopher, & politician who lived from 5 BC to 65 AD.

"All art is an imitation of nature." is the quote I chose.

To illustrate this I chose a canvas platform, which an artist would use to "imitate nature", and had natural objects such as plants and animals coming out of the canvas. Mostly cool colors (three shades of green, blue, and tan) accompany an orange to bring this one out on a navy shirt.

This week's derby was a nice challenge for a change. One color continuous line art. For my first entry I made a phoenix. Sort of symbolic rising again, a little chinese influence. Thought I'd throw something together for this week's derby at shirt.woot. The theme is "video games through art history". I decided on a portal reference, the beloved companion cube, and drew it up in an art deco style. Seems a bit more of an architectural art deco style but I like it nonetheless. My favorite part is the angel in the center. Certainly there is room for improvement but I'm satisfied nonetheless.

I did this design for shirt.woot's "emergency" derby last July, and it wasn't printed. Admittedly I was a little surprised it wasn't picked for an HM, either. For some reason they really haven't been liking my work lately. Anyway, I added some shading and subbed it for the Threadless Loves Travel contest. Looking at all the amazing work there already, I do realize that I have a minimal chance of winning the contest, but perhaps they'll pick it up anyhow. Here's to hoping!

Well, that didn't end so good now did it. Although 1.88 isn't an awful score, it's definitely out of the print range save another "April Fools" printing like they did this year.

Well, I've had this one for awhile so it's not really new, but shirt.woot has owned the rights to the design even though they'll never use it. Now it's mine again so I submitted it to Design By Humans' 10K contest. There's so much amazing artwork in it that I'm sure I don't stand a chance in winning that popularity contest, but here's to hoping they choose some other shirts to print that don't win.

This week's theme at shirt.woot is desserts, so I'm pandering using death (as the grim reaper) as a model for "death by chocolate". While I was making this I had Illustrator crash on me and corrupt the file after I had done the framing out. Lame. So, I livetraced my exported .png death and proceeded to color. In some ways it looks OK still since the chocolate is melty, but otherwise I'm not entirely pleased with it. Oh well! Save, save, save.
